A Community Where Online Teachers Learn to Build a Sustainable Business on Their Own Terms

Grow your business with proven strategies and personal feedback

How long have you been stuck in 1:1 lessons, unpredictable income and crazy hours? Several months? Maybe several years?

You bought the books, read the blog posts and attended the webinars. You tweaked your website a couple of times, spent hours on Facebook and even tried advertising. But nothing seems to work.

You’re tired of working around the clock and still not earning enough, but you don’t know how to change that.

I know that feeling.

Elena Mutonono image

I’m Elena Mutonono,

and I help burned out online teachers move beyond 1:1 Skype lessons to create a smarter system where you can teach your clients on your own terms.

After my first ESL teaching business fell apart in 2014 due to the war, I realized I had to make some drastic changes. I began working with the global market and found it challenging to stand out. How could I market in a language that’s not my mother tongue? How can I charge more?

I needed guidance but couldn’t justify the $500 investment in a 1.5-hour coaching session. Would it be enough? I wanted ongoing support for several years at an affordable monthly rate, which was unavailable. I wasted precious time looking for answers on YouTube or Google, trying to figure out who was more “legit.”

That’s why I have created the Smart Teacher’s Library – a place where online teachers and coaches can build sustainable businesses, support and cheer for each other and get guidance and coaching from people who have more experience.

Since launching it in 2017, my community has helped hundreds of online coaches find their niche, create new programs and build a sustainable business on their own terms.

Whether you’re done with 1:1 classes or want to skip the back-to-back classes altogether to build a more sustainable business, this community will help you grow, learn, promote your work, get referrals, collaborations and put your knowledge to action.

What is Smart Teacher’s Library?

The Smart Teacher’s Library is a combination of mini tutorials, in-depth online courses, mindset-shifting coaching with the use of reflective tools and doodles, sales practice calls, and a support group that allows you to learn at your own pace. Get valuable feedback, networking opportunities, client referrals and tips from your peers and mentors.

Find valuable materials about any aspect of running an online teaching business within minutes. Learn about the problems of others. Ask questions and share your own struggles with a supportive community where teachers are cheering for each other.

Join monthly group coaching sessions and go through the materials at your own pace. Stay for as long as you want, engage and collaborate with other teachers or take time working on your own with the growing bank of self-coaching tools. The Library operates on recurring payments, and the longer you stay the more bonuses you unlock!

One of the best decisions I made
for my teaching career.

I joined the Smart Teachers library in 2021 after attending a summit, and it was one of the best decisions I made for my teaching career.

Thanks to the library, and the community within Slack I gained the confidence and skills to quit working for a language school where I no longer felt valued and start my own medical English business, where I teach what I love and work with my ideal clients.

I recently took the brave step of running a virtual weekend for medical professionals, and with the support of Elena and the other teachers, I hope to develop my asynchronous programmes futher. None of which would be possible without the resources in the library, because before I started out, I had no idea how to create a landing page, plan a campaign or market my own work.

But mostly, being part of the library has meant that I’ve never felt like I’m doing this alone. Through the ups and downs I have felt supported, I’ve gained new perspectives, and I am now learning how to self-coach, which is a work in progress.

I love having access to Elena’s ongoing quality content.

I have been a member of the library since it opened. So I’ve had the experience of going through Elena’s well-organized tutorials when I have practical needs. But the library is still relevant to me. AS A MEMBER, YOU’LL GET GROUP COACHING SESSIONS + 4 QUARTERLY Q&As:

Group coaching graphic

Group Coaching Sessions

Meet your peers and mentors face-to-face to dive deeper into a topic, ask for advice or run your ideas by them before making an important decision.

In each session, we take time to journal, explore our thoughts, identify our old beliefs that keep us stuck and shift them so we can create better results. There’s time to break into small groups and get into a hot seat for private coaching.

The groups consist of 12-15 participants, and there’s always enough time for everyone to ask questions and share ideas. Each session runs between 60 and 90 minutes.

Our schedule for 2024: January 22, February 19, March 18, April 15, May 20 at 1 PM Central time (US) | 7 PM London time (the rest of the year TBA).

All sessions are recorded and will be accessible to you even if you aren’t able to join live.

Quarterly pre-recorded Q&As

Do you have a specific question you want to find an answer to? Submit your questions for a quarterly Q&A and access them as video or audio files. Recordings are between 20 – 60 minutes, depending on the number of questions submitted, and they are insightful for the entire community because most teacher struggle with similar challenges.

You can submit your questions 4 times a year: January, April, July and October.

Q&A graphic
Online courses graphic

Dive deep into 12 online courses + books

Short tutorials may not have an in-depth answer to your questions so every Library member has access to a growing bank of online courses on Instagram, pricing, planning promotions and creating a product. Every year you can enroll in a new online course and programs on how to teach without 1:1 classes.

Free access to courses most popular with online teachers:

  • Instagram for Language Teachers ($300 value)
  • From 1 to Infinity workshop ($50 value)
  • Product Creation Lab Intensive ($400 value)

There’re more than 12 courses + 6 e books – all 50% off for Library members.

Self-coaching tools

In every group coaching session you will be introduced to powerful self-coaching tools, like the Equation of Emotion, Emotional GPS and a variety of worksheets to analyze your progress and failures. You will build daily mindfulness practice, learn to understand and shift your thoughts and emotions that guide your actions and create new results.

When you work online, emotions of fear, anxiety, anger, jealousy, self-doubt, overwhelm and disappointment come up all the time. To cope, you blame your customers, the algorithms, the economy. You binge-watch webinars and spend hours making a 30-second video clip. You overwork and burn out.

It’s important to recognize that when you spend 80% of your working time steeped in fear, anxiety or disappointment, you will struggle to sell no matter how many courses you take.

The self-coaching tools that you’ll get in the Library, along with journaling and doodling prompts will help you gain confidence and courage to market and sell your work.

Doodle Lessons graphic

Enjoy doodle lessons.

Check out monthly lessons using doodles and simple creativity to explain complicated concepts and challenge the most common beliefs that sabotage your process.

Beliefs like:

  • If it’s going to take so long, I might as well not start at all.
  • This is never going to work for me.
  • I’m a bad marketer/sales person.
  • None of my students will buy this.
  • I’m not going to pitch because I will sound greedy.
  • I can’t post it until it’s perfect.
  • If I promote my offer people will think I’m salesy.

… and many others.

Through monthly doodle lessons you will learn to overcome your own limiting beliefs, open yourself up to see more possibilities and feel more empowered.

Sales call practice (every other month)

Selling is at the core of your online teaching business. It’s challenging because it goes beyond exercising your craft of teaching. It goes deeper and it touches most of the fears we’ve internalized from childhood: that we’re not enough, that nobody cares about our work, that our offers are too expensive (or not good enough to cost more), etc.

Selling boils down to practice. It’s a skill just like any other skill you’ve learned up to this point. You learn to sell by working on your belief, polishing and simplifying your offer and tackling objections. That’s why we have our mock sales calls – to practice these skills and to get better at selling.

Don’t feel like being in the hot seat selling and getting feedback? Join as an observer and learn. Or watch the recordings! This will give you much quicker returns than going through a long course on selling.

I appreciate that lots of attention
is placed on self-care…

I love Elena’s community. It is a non-judgmental, safe space where I can receive support and answers from different perspectives of business owners. Also, it’s beneficial to my mental health to see what it takes (and how long) to grow your business in reality as people are sharing their experiences. I no longer feel alone, lost, or the slowest person on earth.

I appreciate that lots of attention is placed on self-care – it is an excellent reminder to slow down, take more precise actions and connect with my authentic self. Working with Elena and being in the library changed my perception of a successful business on my own terms and what it means to be my best boss. On my way 🙂

I wish I would have had the courage to invest
in my ideas and business much earlier in my journey.

I came into the library through a speaking program that Elena facilitated to show teachers how an asynchronous speaking program can work.

I had been making courses for a while but really struggled with selling. I easily felt overwhelmed and had problems prioritizing. My days were full but I still didn’t see any results. I overdelivered for the courses and the paid offers I seeked to put out. I needed a major shift in the way I approached my work on a daily basis.
Starting to work asynchronous with many of my students freed up so much time which allowed me to refocus and spend more time creatively rather than chasing fast results.

I especially enjoy the variety and quantity of the library content as my brain jumps from one focus to the next. Whatever question I had was answered by Elena herself and other members – often even in personalized video coachings.

The closer I come to the edupreneur way of life the more important mindset work becomes and I really appreciate that the library does not only focus on hard information but also presents a lot of mindset work and coaching. I wish I would have had the courage to invest in my ideas and business much earlier in my journey. The library is a fantastic resource, a place to connect and mostly a big push to take the next step wherever you are on your path.

I learned the fundamentals
of community creation…

I started out my journey at the STL hoping to increase my 1:1 prices at Italki and teach Italian. By the time I left it, I had a budding retreat business that allows me to keep my family and also to have time for myself.

The Library helped me broaden my horizons, dare to dream bigger, feel supported in my endeavors, but most of all, show up for myself. After I left, the things I learned helped me create supportive systems automatically.

Not a day goes by that something I learned during my time at the library, comes useful in taking some decisions. Last but not least, I learned the fundamentals of community creation and the connections I built in the library, are still with me six years later.

A great community of people that are on a similar career path...

I joined the Smart Teacher’s Library 4 months ago. Not only have I found countless resources to learn from, but also a great community of people that are on a similar career path, eager to share both failure and success, enjoying the process of becoming a better professional and managing our businesses more sustainably.

I have launched my first product and I am experiencing a mindset shift, which is leading me towards delivering less 1:1 online sessions, with Elena’s support and feedback.

I desperately needed a community where I could ask for advice and celebrate my successes.

When Elena launched the subscription for the Smart Teacher Library, I didn’t see what it would do
for me. It was “too good to be true.”

I desperately needed a community where I could ask for advice and celebrate my successes. And they are coming!

I know it’s a big commitment, but even if it’s only been a few months and I don’t have much to show for yet, I have the motivation and the keys to improve, in my own way and at my own pace. Without judgement or inappropriate or unsuitable advice and with kindness. And, now, I am on my way. Thank you Elena.

When Elena launched the subscription for the Smart Teacher Library, I didn’t see what it would do for me.
